VILNIUS CITY TOUR

The capital Vilnius is one of the most beautiful towns in Eastern Europe, situated at the junction of the Neris and Vilnele rivers and surrounded by picturesque wooded hills. Founded in 1323, its unique character and architecture reflects its history at crossroads of the Roman, Byzantine and Eurasian worlds.

GUIDED TOUR OF VILNIUS UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

Vilnius University Library founded in 1570, has remained in its authentic place up to now. THE MUSEUM OF GENOCIDED VICTIMS

The Museum of Genocide Victims was established in the former KGB headquarters where plans for deportations and the arrests of peaceful inhabitants, the persecution of opponents and the suppression of the resistance were devised and carried out by Soviet institutions during the occupation.

TOUR OF HANDICRAFTS OF VILNIUS

During the tour the unique Republic of Užupis – a colorful and alive artists’ “republic” will be discovered. As a separate “republic” Užupis has its own constitution, national anthem, calendar and map. Visiting Užupis delegates will look in the workshops of Vilnius Potters and Užupio Cemetery to see and try themselves to make a traditional handcraft.

TOUR TO TRAKAI

Trakai is located 28 km west of Vilnius. There are many lakes in the region. Trakai Castle dating back to the 15th century (in the middle of Lake Galvė) is the only insular castle throughout Eastern Europe. Island castle is one of the most visited historical-architectural monuments in Lithuania. The distinctive feature of Trakai is that the town was built and preserved by people of different nationalities. Here lived communities of Karaites, Tartars, Lithuanians, Russians and Poles.

The history of Karaites is connected with Lithuania since 1397-1398. According to the tradition, the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas, after one of the marches to the Golden Horde steppes, brought several hundreds of Karaites from the Crimea to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Initially, the Karaites settled in Trakai between two castles of the Great Duke, on the present Karaites Street.

During this excursion you will have an opportunity to try one of the most famous non-ritual dishes kybyn (pl. kybynlar). It is a leavened paste cake in the shape of a half-moon with lamb or beef filling baked in the oven or on the tin.

TOUR TO TRAKAI AND KERNAVĖ

Trakai is located 28 km west of Vilnius. There are many lakes in the region. Trakai Castle & Museum of 15th century (in the middle of Lake Galvė) is the only insular castle throughout Eastern Europe. To get an eyeful of spectacular nature delegates could take a short boat trip around the castle.

In the 13th century Kernavė was the first Lithuanian state capital. At that time it was a wooden town of feudal artisans and merchants and one of the major economic centers of the country. Five fortified mounds served to protect the Duke’s castle and the town. There are more than one thousand of these ancient mounds in Lithuania, but this is the only place where you will find so many of them together.

TOUR TO OPEN-AIR FOLK LIFE MUSEUM OF RUMŠIŠKĖS

Rumšiškės is best known for its excellent open-air ethnographic museum (established in 1966 and opened in 1974), one of the largest in Europe. The open-air museum in Rumšiškės displays the heritage of Lithuanian rural life in a vast collection of authentic resurrected buildings where the Lithuanian people lived and worked. In addition the Open Air Folk Museum offers their guests various educational programs on different topics: the pathway of flax, candle making lessons, bread baking lessons etc.

TOUR TO KAUNAS AND PAŽAISLIS MONASTERY

Kaunas is the second largest city in Lithuania and lies within 100 km from Vilnius. It is situated at the confluence of the rivers Nemunas and Neris. Kaunas is charming not only for its historical buildings, green parks, but it is well known for its museums, counted over twenty with all their branches. The M. K. Ciurlionis Art Gallery is nearby. Philosophical pictures by the Lithuanian artist and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis (1875-1911) will make visit to Kaunas really unforgettable. Today it is significant center of science, culture and industry. Also delegates will visit Pazaislis Monastery of XVIII century. In the last years it became the Centre of Culture. Because of its perfect acoustics many concerts take place there in the summer time.
